Nowadays, the internet has matured and more and more people are creating their own social accounts online for a variety of reasons. They ignore all the physical limitations of reality and communicate with people from all over the world through their ideas on the internet to reap the benefits of each other. As a result, more and more people with the same purpose are coming together and forming more and more groups. So, how do we properly create our own PLN?
First of all, I think the most initial point is to determine your reason for creating a PLN. After that, according to this factor go to the network to find the target that will satisfy you. And this goal can be one person, two or three people, or a group of many people. In the process of searching, it is inevitable that we will encounter various platforms. Some platforms may meet your goals, some may not. In my opinion, it’s best to find the platform that fits your goal, but it doesn’t matter if you can’t find it. The platform is not important! The important thing is the people inside!
So, before you want to run a social media campaign for your chosen topic, create accounts on multiple social platforms and then post extensively with your personal purpose. After that, you can wait for other like-minded people to reach out to you or you can look for people you see and ask them if they are interested in exploring with you.
According to my personal understanding, after the basic material needs are met, people focus their attention on how to improve themselves. We don’t need to try to fill our own defects and reach the same level as others now. With the development of the times, what we need more is identity, where each person can fully demonstrate their own identity.
Just as Moore and Schnellert said in the book, our society no longer expects people to simply obey. How to find individuals’ advantages and unique expertise is what we should focus on. In the world, we meet a wide variety of people, each with their own unique strengths. That’s why inclusiveness is increasingly important today. We need to know how to get along with others. On the Internet, this is even more important.
PLN and Inclusion
The essence of networking is sharing. Different people share their unique experiences, thoughts, feelings, etc. on the internet. The reason why people share is because they are social animals and cannot live without the company of others. Another reason is emotion. It has become the norm for people to vent their emotions on the internet. The happiness, disgust, and other emotions that come from interacting with others are good explanations for inclusiveness.
Every interaction between people is a wonderful chemical reaction, and no one knows what will happen. When people share their stories on the internet, other people in that story may browse it. In reality, some people may want to know something about a specific location, then he posts his thoughts on a forum or similar website, and then someone from that place may browse and leave a comment on his website, after which the two communicate with each other and share their stories.
By far, the point that I think best exemplifies the importance of inclusion is the issue of ethnicity. Black, yellow, and white people will always have insurmountable problems with each other’s inclusion because of the color of their skin. Both in the real world and on the internet.
How does social media help?
As mentioned before, people use social media for the two main factors of self-expression, and emotion. The saying “you get what you pay for” also applies to the web. When we express ourselves on social media, we often receive messages back from others. These people may be from the same place as you, or they may be from another country. They will give you an insight that is as fresh and useful (perhaps) to you as it is from their perspective. On the other hand, when you are the respondent, some people will refute or agree with your ideas, and you will debate with others, and finally get something out of it. And some of these people you interact with may be teachers, some may be drivers, etc. They will give you a very distinctive answer based on their own upbringing. After this, you will gain a lot. Each interaction with others will enrich your experience, expand your horizons, and therefore expand your inclusiveness and diversity. When faced with the same thing, you will look at it from a different perspective and give your own unique answer.
What digital platforms are students currently using to develop their professional network?
What is clear is that at least the students in this class are using WordPress as a platform to build their own professional networks. In addition to that, from what I know about the people around me, basically, everyone has at least one account on Google, Snapchat, Youtube, etc. They will use these platforms to have fun, exchange information, and learn knowledge.
What could the student consider in expanding their professional learning network?
I think there are quite a few things that need to be taken into account to extend the professional learning network. I will show some of my ideas next.
The core idea of expanding PLN
Students need to think about why they are going to extend. This answer needs to be clear, organized, and simple. All of the students’ subsequent actions need to be centered around this answer. Each action will further elaborate on this core idea, as well as parse it.
2. Find the right environment for you
People are group animals, no matter what they do, they can not do without the help of the group. Therefore, it is vital to know how to find the right environment for yourself. The information on the Internet is too mixed, too much, so we need to find the “circle” to use the benefits of the network more efficiently. A “circle” can be understood as a combination of information that is most helpful to you after being filtered.
In this environment, we need to actively communicate with others, which is the purpose of entering the circle. But some of you may ask, how do I go about communicating with others? Some people may be so shy about it that they are afraid to interact with others. However, we need to know that our personal information is protected and the person we are communicating with will not know who we are or what kind of person we are. So go ahead and speak up and show your purpose. This way, people will keep coming to you to talk to each other and make progress.
How does data privacy and security limit and/or promote a PLN?
The answer I came up with to this question is the law.
The Internet was created by human technological invention, which means that there are people who use this technology specifically illegally to profit themselves. However, the Internet is not a place outside the law. Every country has laws against the Internet. One of the top priorities is to protect personal information to the greatest extent possible.
pros:
Security is, without a doubt the number one benefit. There is nothing more important than safety.
cons:
The information we see now is restricted. This is because the law exists. There is information that requires additional permission that we need to apply for; there is information that we need to pay to view because laws related to intellectual property rights and such like exist.
In your network, how can you create a digital identity/ reputation?
I think there is only one core answer to this question, and that is clout-chasing.
It’s not weird nowadays that people prefer to go viral on the internet when they have published some posts, tweets, or something else. When some people have more and more web traffic online and more followers, it means their digital identity/reputation is on the rise, and vice versa.
how an employer would respond if you applied for a job with them and they assessed your social media presence via your digital identity.
I think they will first focus on how many followers you have, and secondly browse how many people have viewed and liked your past videos or articles you have published to comprehensively assess your influence on the web. Finally, together with the company, they will evaluate whether the direction of your influence on the web is compatible with the direction the company wants to take.
In the video, Eric Stoller said that digital identity is a sort of your footprint on the web. With this, you can get benefits with others in different areas like education and so on.
According to my understanding, digital identity refers to an overview of the information we have online. Everything we do on the web is a part of our digital identities. The comments we make on the Internet, the videos we post, etc. will be converted by the computer into binary-based electronic signals that will eventually be aggregated into our personal digital identity. This will reflect our unique personalities, emotions, and other characteristics.
Nowadays, in ordinary life, people create personal accounts on different social medias and look for things that appeal to them. The content pushed in each person’s account can’t be exactly the same, it will only be similar. The reason for this is because each of us is unique and the web does a good job of recording our habits and reflecting them.
How do personal versus professional approaches to digital identity affect social media use?
In real life, everyone has different identities, such as professors, doctors, lawyers, and so on. These identities have their own unique points for people to record and distinguish. These characteristics stand out in contrast to normal people and are the difference between personal and professional digital identities.
In social media, a professional digital identity brings all kinds of convenience. For example, when someone has a doctor’s logo on the web, it is commonly found in his channel or in the records he views on a daily basis in relation to medicine. And when others want to know something about medicine, they can search online and find a lot of answers to their questions. The providers of these answers are the accounts that have the characteristic of “doctor” on the Internet.
Therefore, for individual digital accounts, the advent of professional digital accounts means that they are not looking for relevant answers without direction and have to question the correctness of that answer when they find it. The convenience enjoyed by personal digital accounts will grow. On the other hand, professional digital accounts will also have the benefit of increasing their reputation, fame and getting revenue. The revenue generated on the web also feeds back to the relevant aspects in reality.
How do digital identities converge in networked publics – what are the impacts and/or benefits?
The convergence of digital identities in a networked public means that everyone’s information on the web is integrated and connected in one piece. All the information in the world exists on the web.
Today, the impact that I have observed is that people are largely inseparable from the Web in their daily lives. Whether it’s for entertainment, learning, or communicating with others, they rely on the ease, efficiency, and substantial benefits of the Internet.
People in all fields must be connected to this information age if they want to further their influence on the public or consider other benefits. For example, after creating an account on a relevant platform and applying for professional certification, one can continuously post videos or posts on the web to increase one’s influence, which in turn feeds into one’s actual income of benefits. Therefore, the most intuitive impact of the integration of digital identities in the networked public is nothing but profit and fame.
The second impact as I see it can be summed up in one sentence: the Internet has no memory. Information changes so quickly that the words and other traces of personal accounts left on the Internet are quickly washed away by all kinds of information. With the rapid exchange and integration of information on the Internet, people in all fields should pay attention to the direction of relevant information. However, any failure to keep up with the changes in information can cause major problems. At the same time, when some people want to cover up the fact that something has happened, they can use a huge amount of information to wash away, use one hot news to distract attention, and finally cover up the negative information that happened in the past.
